In this course, focus will be given to the history, cultures, and contemporary issues of the non-Western world and its peoples, including East Asia, Southeast and South Asia, the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, and Native and Latin America, with emphasis on both indigenous cultural development and cross-cultural exchange. An understanding of and appreciation for diverse traditions, beliefs, behaviors, and points of view, will be emphasized.
Mrs. Michelle Butler-Evans is joining the Bishop McNamara staff to begin as the Freshmen Gateway English teacher. She is a native of Prince George's County, MD, where she was educated with PGCPS and is a first-generation college graduate. After high school, Mrs. Butler- Evans pursued her B.A. in English at Johnson C. Smith University (Charlotte, NC) and upon graduation earned her Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Wake Forest University School of Divinity (Winston-Salem, NC).
It was in North Carolina where she began teaching 9th and 10th grade English at Parkland Magnet High School. During this time she also worked as the full-time Youth and Young Adult Pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church, the most historic African American congregation in Winston-Salem. After she returned to PG County, Mrs. Butler-Evans began teaching 8th-grade Reading/English/Language Arts with PGCPS. Mrs. Butler-Evans is passionate about teaching, advocating for students, and cultivating safe spaces for an optimal learning experience. Mrs. Butler-Evans only has one class rule "Discipline yourself, so I don't have to!" This makes students accountable for their actions and behavior at all times while in her classroom. Mrs. Butler- Evans is extremely excited to be joining the BMHS family and is looking forward to all that is to come.
